Dance-Pop is a sub genre of pop music that originated in the early 1980s. Dance-Pop is a very popular mainstream style of music, with many popular artists performing in this genre, including Cher, Madonna, the Spice Girls, Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue.
It wasn’t uncommon for artists, who were traditionally bubblegum eurodance in style, to later move into Dance-Pop styles, as it was considered more “mainstream” and therefore was more likely to be played on the radio and in the charts. Aqua is an example of an artist who was deeply influenced by Dance-Pop; their new album “Megalomania” in 2011 was deeply influenced by styles made popular by Lady Gaga and Britney Spears at the time.
There was also a rise in Dance-Pop groups from Germany aimed at children during the mid-2000s, many of which were influenced by the success of Dutch Bubblegum Dance-Pop group Ch!pz. Projects such as Banaroo, BeFour, and Culture Box were all formed with the aim of infiltrating the charts, and their chart-friendly Dance-Pop style incorporated many elements from traditional bubblegum eurodance.
Production & Style
The majority of dance-pop music is producer-driven, meaning it is the producer who oversees all aspects of the song’s production. It is generally characterised by strong beats with easy, uncomplicated song structure, and an emphasis on melody and catchy tunes.
Dance-Pop is known for being very diverse in it’s style, having borrowed many elements from other genres, including house, trance, techno and electro pop. By the late 1990s, electronic influences became evident in dance-pop music, as advancements in music production technology, as well as shifting trends, made artists want to encourage more electronic and techno sounds to their music.
