Eurodance is a genre of electronic music that originated in the 1980s in Europe, and was at its peak between 1993 and the early 2000s. A typical eurodance song will have male rappers sing the verses, and a female singer perform the chorus, but variations are not rare. Traditional Bubblegum Dance is a sub-genre of Eurodance, though many bubblegum dance artists later changed their style, experimenting with Dance-Pop and other forms of dance music.
A bulk of eurodance production during 1993-2000 was made in Italy and Germany, although Scandinavian countries also jumped on the eurodance bandwagon, especially to produce the happy, cheesy variation, which would become known as bubblegum dance. Entering the 2000s, the style changed drastically and branched out to be associated with new subgenres, including Italodance and Hands Up, while sometimes still being called Eurodance.
Eurodance is sometimes confused with the related Euro House, which in fact draws influences from Dance-pop, rather than Techno and Hi-NRG.
Production & style
Eurodance was born out of various styles, including Hi-NRG, House, Techno, Hi-NRG, and Pop-Dance. Eurodance is very formulaic and producer-driven and makes heavy use of synthesisers, strong baselines, and pounding beats. It has a set tempo anywhere between 90 and 160 BPM, though usually songs are in the 120-150 BPM range.
