Our latest countdown highlights the Top 20 bubblegum dance one hit wonders of all time. These projects only released one or two singles during their years active, before fading into obscurity. But boy were these great releases!
20 - Shine - Loverboy
Shine is the traditional bubblegum project of Yummie members Guran Floran and Teddy Geson. Sadly this fantastic bubblegum dance tune was only released in select Asian countries, and the Shine project was dissolved shortly afterwards. Regardless, Shine stands out as one of the top one hit wonder bubblegum acts of all time.
19 - Lips - 1993
Released in 2000, “1993” is the first and only single by Italian group Lips. Very little is known about this group, other than the fact they released a fantastic bubblegum tune right when bubblegum was in it’s peak.
18 - Plazma - Getting Married (Ding Dong Ding)
Johnny Jam & Delgado, the well-known bubblegum dance producers who remixed many popular acts including Aqua, Daze and Hit’n’Hide, began a series of projects in the bubblegum genre that did not receive the success that they deserved. Plazma was one of those groups, with the vivacious single - "Getting Married (Ding Dong Ding)."
17 - Bo & Monica - This Is How We Party
Bo & Monica from the Netherlands are one of those artists who regardless of their amazing quality tunes, failed to pump out more than a few singles. "This Is How We Party" is our pick as the best of their tracks, and "Gonna Be A Star" and "Please Please Santa" aren't far behind. It's a shame this duo didn't have an album release because it would have been fantastic.
16 - Cometz - Scooby Dooby Boy
Jam & Delgado once again lend their expert production skills to another Danish group in 1998, this time Cometz, a project built around the vocalist Marlene Tellef. The debut single “Scooby Dooby Boy” featured Jam & Delgado’s trademark array of thumping beats and synths with the tuneful and cooky lyrics that may or may not have been inspired by Scooby Doo. A follow up single “Please. Mr Postman” (a cover of the Carpenters track) was released shortly after, but sadly neither of the tracks garnished the success they had hoped for.
15 - DJ Lapell feat Mary Lou - Me and My Chihuahua
“Me and My Chihuahua” was released at a time when bubblegum production was dryer than a burnt bush, so any fresh bubblegum tunes were welcomed with open arms. Me and My Chihuahua, with it’s excellent Venga-inspired production (Melody Maker mixes), cheesy lyrics, and high-pitched vocals, was a huge surprise and stood out as one of the best bubblegum one hit wonders.
14 - Popgirlz - Do The Jumpstyle
Popgirlz's unique sound attempted to modernise bubblegum dance production in 2007 with the release of "Do The Jumpstyle" which combined a eurodance bubblegum sound with hands up. Sadly the group failed to take off and only one more song was released on compilation, "Jump."
13 - Lola J - Hey Tommy!
"Hey Tommy!" Is arguably one of the first bubblegum dance songs ever created, coming in 1995 around the same time as Me & My were making waves with their hit "Dub I Dub." Unfortunately the project mustn't have found the success they wanted as they disappeared after one single. Regardless Lola J goes down in history as one of the first, and best, one hit wonder bubblegum projects.
12 - Love System - Bim Bam Boy
Love System was a Polish music group who worked alongside producer Janardana in the late 1990s to produce several tunes in a bubblegum dance style. The most successful was the iconic "Bim Bam Boy" which is the epitome of a polished bubblegum dance tune. Love System released only a couple more tunes in the "Bim Bam Boy" style, though none of them matched the quality and specialty of the original.
11 - Millane Fernandez - Dam Dubi Dam
We challenge you to listen to this song and not end up humming it for hours afterwards. "I Miss You" is the solo release of German singer Millane Fernandez and is an infectious love tune with a strong bubblegum flavouring.
10 - Inga From Sweden - My Name Is Inga
2007 was a fantastic year for bubblegum dance production, with many new artists emerging from Germany and Scandinavia. One of the best of these artists was a project by the name of "Inga From Sweden". The debut single "My Name Is Inga" boasts cheeky lyrics, a catchy melody and thick thumping beats. The song was well received internationally but only two more singles were released by the project (Inga's Xxxmas and Mama Paparazzi) before the project fell into inactivity.
9 - Tempo feat. Manola - Everybody Get Up
"Everybody Get Up" is one of the most recognisable bubblegum dance anthems, and regardless of its success was Tempo feat. Manola's first and only release. The song is a bouncy Vengaboys-influenced tune with feel good lyrics, and is one of bubblegum's best offerings.
8 - Smiles & More - Jet Set Life
“Jet Set Life” is often credited incorrectly as a Smile.dk song, largely due to mislabeling on file share applications in the late 2000s. The group was created by Felix J. Gauder, who was involved in the E-Rotic eurodance project, and was inspired to make a bubblegum dance group considering the success of many other acts at the time. Sadly, regardless of it’s fantastic quality, “Jet Set Life” was not successful and no more singles came from the group.
7 - 3-2-1 - The Ski Song
“The Ski Song” is our pick as the best Jam & Delgado bubblegum project, with the two others having been previously mentioned. Immediately captivating with it’s gorgeous vocal and rippling synth-driven production, “The Ski Song” was 3-2-1’s first and last release, and the project sadly faded into obscurity after it’s release.
6 - Kristeen - Ba Be Loo Be La (You’re My Superstar)
Kristeen’s “Ba Be Loo Be La (You’re My Superstar)” gained a lot of popularity through it’s use in the dance game Pump it Up, and the instrumental opening is arguably one of the most recognisable (and catchy) tunes in bubblegum. Kristeen had a string of other releases after “Ba Be Loo Be La”, but this was her only English song, and an album was never released.
5 - Yumm Yumm - Happy Day
Yumm Yumm, the brainchild of American producer Nivek Tek, originally started as a traditional bubblegum act in 2001 and they had a rare EP “Whole Lotta Fun” which was released to a very limited audience. However, it wasn’t until 2007 that the project really attempted to take off when they released their debut single “Happy Day.” The maxi single featured a huge range of remixes from well-known European DJs, in an attempt to capture the interest of DJs around the world. Sadly, regardless of various attempts at marketing, Yumm Yumm failed to find the success they had hoped for and eventually disappeared from production after one last single release, the ultra campy “Super Duper Christmas.”
4 - Fun-TC - Crazy
Fun-TC epitomises everything a bubblegum dance project should be; high energy, camp, and loaded with buckets of sugar! “Crazy” was Fun-TC’s one and only single release and is a perfect package of delicious bubblegum, with sweet girly vocals and expert high-energy production. They also had another compilation-album song called “Yuppie Ah Yeah” which we almost listed instead of “Crazy” because it really is an incredible song. If there was one artist we wish released an album, it would be Fun-TC.
3 - Babe - Oh My Little Baby Boy
Nothing quite screams “bubblegum anthem” like 1999’s “Oh My Little Baby Boy” - the sugar-coated debut single by Finnish act Babe. Regardless of it’s top-notch production and vocals, “Oh My Little Baby Boy” did not receive the success it deserved, probably due to a lack of promotion, and apart from a compilation song release “Call Me” there were no more singles from Babe.
2 - Cocktail - Kakadu
Probably one of the bounciest and cutest bubblegum songs ever written, Cocktail’s 2000 single “Kakadu” left listeners gagging for more. The song is sung from the point of view of a singing cockatoo (if that's not cute on its own then what is!), and the production features a delicious array of synthesisers, whistles and string instruments.
1 - Genie - Little Green Men
2001’s “Little Green Men”, the irresistible dance anthem by Genie comes in at #1 as our top bubblegum dance one hit wonder of all time. The song features electrifying production by Anders Nyman and Robin Rex of Smile.dk fame, and catchy hooks written by Morgan Jalsing of Hit’n’Hide. Bubblegum fans were truly robbed when Genie faded into obscurity shortly after the release of this song, and to torture fans even more, producer Anders Nyman revealed years later in an interview that there were even some leftover songs that were intended for an album but remain unreleased. Maybe these will one day see the light of day? We can dream!
